COM1 supports one-to-one voice and video calls over WebRTC. Calls are associated with a direct conversation; group video calling is not part of the current implementation.
Start a call
/call # start a direct voice call
/video # start a direct video call
/call permissions # Android call-alert access settings
You can also use the phone or camera icons in an eligible direct chat. The recipient can Answer or Decline; media begins after acceptance.
During an active call
- Mic: mute/unmute microphone while keeping the connection.
- Speaker: change audio route where supported. Bluetooth and wired routes depend on the device.
- Video on/off: switch between audio-only and camera video without hanging up; each participant chooses when their own camera starts.
- Flip camera: switch front/rear cameras on supported devices.
- Fullscreen: expand remote video, show a floating self-preview and exit fullscreen without ending the call.
- Hang up: terminate the session and clean up local tracks.
Foreground and background behavior
| Context | Current capability |
|---|---|
| Both apps open | Foreground one-to-one voice/video call invitations, acceptance and WebRTC media. |
| Android background / locked | Call-wake patch uses FCM and native incoming-call UI if Edge Function, webhook and permissions are deployed. Delivery is best-effort. |
| iPhone background / terminated | Dedicated PushKit/CallKit VoIP push integration is not yet implemented. |
| Unreachable network | WebRTC may need a configured TURN relay; STUN alone does not guarantee all calls connect. |
| Active group | Voice/video group calling not implemented. |
Privacy and safety
WebRTC media is transported encrypted, but COM1's custom call setup has not been independently audited. Other participants can record or capture content outside the app. Call attempts are restricted by user blocking and COM1's account/first-contact protections; a new unaccepted direct message request cannot initiate a call.
Fix common problems
- Check microphone and camera permissions.
- If the screen dims during a video call, ensure the updated video-display patch is installed.
- Check Android notification and full-screen calling permissions for background calls.
- Test both Wi‑Fi and mobile data; restrictive NAT may need TURN.
- Update both devices to matching video-call versions before trying voice↔video changes.
